Still awestruck to have met one of the legendary ocean heroes!! Her Deepness, Dr Sylvia Earle is a pioneer in ocean exploration and have spent more than 7000 hours underwater. She is such an inspiration!! 💙💙 Thank you @_jenshook for capturing this moment!! @insidenatgeo #Natgeofest #LetsExplore #oceanheroes #womenforoceans #womenempowerment #natgeoexplorers

If you have watched Into The Okavango film you would know that Mr Water can dance. But that's nothing compared to his dance at the Party For The Planet at NatGeo last week, he showed makgoa that no matter your age, you got to add style to that rhythm. Video loading! #natgeofest

#sharks #shark #science #NatGeoFest @insidenatgeo #research #love #lecture #washingtondc

Video 🎥 by @alexbraczkowski Here’s a little lion cub cuteness to lighten up your weekend @natgeowild lovers! @alexbraczkowski shot this little clip of this cub (one of 2) in Kasenyi, Uganda a month and a half back. They are the future and hope of lion conservation in this part of Africa. Lions here have undergone a significant decline over the past 10 years but there is hope when we have sightings like this one. Lions in most parts of Uganda and Tanzania are threatened by bushmeat hunting (poaching of prey) and when farmers kill them for eating their livestock. If we can work with human communities to stop these threats we can save lions ☝️🌍 . . . . . #caturday #cub #lioncub #cutenessoverload #babyanimals #eastafrica #uganda #lions #beauty #wildlife #conservation #natgeowild #NatGeoFest

This was such an unreal moment for me. The roar of the crowd from left to right with the sounds of Crying, Confusion, and Joy.

#Repost @natgeo Photos by Brent Stirton @brentstirton | This week, I spoke with Nat Geo writer Rachael Bale at the National Geographic Explorers Festival about our work on pangolins. These amazing animals tragically are among the world’s most illegally trafficked mammals. No one has any real idea how many pangolins are left. The trade is huge, both from a thriving Asian market for their meat in the restaurant trade and their scales in traditional medicine. There is no proven scientific basis for the medical aspect, and there are over one hundred alternatives to pangolin scales in traditional Chinese medicine. Most of those are herbal. Japan and Vietnam also use pangolin scales in their traditional medicine. The conversation should surely be one about alternatives in traditional medicine at a time of such crisis. We were joined on stage by @natashaldaly and @kirstenluce , who discussed their work on controversial captive-wildlife tourism. Your regular reminder that I’m one of National Geographic’s Explorers and not photographers 🥴! Just got back home and @insidenatgeo Explorers week was intense, such a privilege to hang with this crowd and loved the profound and challenging convos of the weekend especially (see next post). I can’t celebrate the people from last week enough - if you don’t know these guys go look up their work: The @intotheokavango guys who won ‘Explorer of the year’- Steve Boyes and his brother @christurtleboyes , Adjani Costa and great to meet Winter. @raewynngrant who studies carnivores, photographer @pete_k_muller who studies masculinity, @ifeatunnaobi who wants us to move away from ‘victims of atrocities being thankful for just being heard’, @kennybroad a complete joy of an anthropologist and a badass cave diver if ever there was one, @solindblad - what happens when adventure and science meets entrepreneurship, Lee Berger whose team just keeps finding stuff, @agmoen who pretends to keep the Explorers under control, @_jenshook and @cherylzook who help develop and expand the explorer community, @explorer_zoltan who studies snakes, Chris Thornton @dere1or who used to run heritage and grants and came back from his new fancy job also er did you guys know that some of those guys that work in the stands at games do that as eccentric enthusiasts as a second job(?!) that’s what Kevin does 😁, @andresruzo of the boiling river, @ashadevos of whales, Debora Trein an archaeologist, Paula from the nat geo doctor’s office- those guys keep me together regularly even when I come in with the most pathetic non expedition injuries, @mariafadiman the sunniest ethnobotanist there ever was, @enricsala the incredible powerhouse and visionary behind NatGeo @natgeopristineseas. #natgeofest

Photo by Kirsten Luce @kirstenluce | While photographing the June 2019 cover story about captive-wildlife tourism, I met countless animal lovers who paid to touch and pose with wild animals in foreign countries with little to no understanding of the bigger picture. More often than not, these animals are subjected to abusive training in order to make them docile enough to interact with tourists each and every day. A cherished digital souvenir for a tourist often means a very poor quality of life for the animal. I’m honored to be speaking about this story at Explorer’s Festival at National Geographic this week. #natgeofest

Photo by Pete Muller @pete_k_muller | In the frigid hours before dawn, men from the indigenous Quechua community gather below a series of disappearing glaciers. Like countless generations before them, they make an annual pilgrimage high into the Peruvian Andes to honor the Lord of Qoyllur Riti, a religious figure whose presence is believed to reside in the glaciers. By firelight, the group discussed the ongoing threats to the glaciers, possible solutions to slow their deterioration, and ways to protect the broader sanctuary area from further degradation. The ongoing disappearance of the glaciers cuts deeply into the emotional worlds of believers. I attended Qoyllur Riti as part of my National Geographic Fellowship work on the emotional experiences that accompany environmental transformation. I am thrilled to share this work for the first time this week at the #NatGeoFest in Washington, DC.

Cannot express how lucky I feel to have attended @natgeo ’s Explorers Festival last week. The festival is a chance for some of the amazing explorers to meet each other and present on their work and every previous year I’ve been on a desert island chasing bats. They were able to squeeze me in at the last minute, so I didn’t present but could just enjoy the festival ;). I met so many amazing and inspiring people, reconnected with friends, almost touched a virtual rhino, talked bats with everyone, and got fancy with Nina for their awards ceremony! What a week! #natgeofest

If you missed my talk at the National Geographic Explorer’s Festival yesterday, this was the core message. Despite the fact that sperm whales and blue whales, the largest toothed whales and largest baleen whales share the same spaces, they have learned to live in harmony with each other and their environment. We have so much left to learn about these giants and we have so much left to learn from these giants. 🐋 🐳 @insidenatgeo #natgeofest @apsi_doodles @oceanswellorg #oceangiants #slblues #bluewhales #spermwhales #reposting with Dr.Asha De vos

Explorer Spotlight talks are fast. 60 seconds + 1 slide. GO! Last Monday morning, there were 60 talks covering a breadth of topics - whales! Giraffe! Bats! Ancient trees! There was even a talk on trash on Mt. Everest. It was a whirlwind tour around the world of Explorers’ expertise, curiosity, adventurousness, and passion. This experience solidified my opportunity to learn, to take it all in, to be in awe and to come away with so many more questions that I could every possibly answer. @insidenatgeo #NatGeoFest

_ ✔️A real one team: _ ✔️From Donors To Donors: 예를 들면 Lyda Hill이라는 여성 투자가가 여성탐험가를 위한 1 million $ 펀드를 조성했는데 한 세션이 "Women at the forefront of conservation" 이름으로 진행되었다. "Curiosity and science don't have gender".

What an inspirational woman! Jane Goodall was my heroine growing up. I loved reading about her remote adventures and her work with chimpanzees. She made me think that I could do that too. She let me see that I could be an adventurer and make a career out of saving the animals I love. I fell in love with bats and like Jane have followed a passion that has been near and dear to my heart. Having positive women role models is SO important for girls growing up, so thank you Jane for being that role model for me! . . . . #NatGeoFest @insidenatgeo #womeninstem #womeninscience #strongwomen #inspirationalwomen #shecanstem

What an incredible week it has been. Thank you @natgeo for inviting me and for curating #natgeofest and thank you @designit_nyc for enabling me to attend. - For the past week, 200 explorers from all over the world gathered to talk about all the different facets of conservation. I’ll never forget the voices I heard, so loud, clear, decisive, and all the faces I met, so kind, cheerful, and set on changing the world for good. - I’m shaken and energized, inspired to push myself to do more, because there’s a lot left to do.

🦉 🕳 🥴That screech you heard in SoCal’s shrinking wild lands may have sounded like a burrowing owl- but sorry to say- it was me. While trekking through hole filled habitats & placing small nesting flags near burrows used by these ground dwelling owls, my leg moved forward while my ankle took a left hand turn downward. And then snap- it’s twisted & badly sprang. From conferences with yellow borders to a yellow framed ankle brace - a week of NatGeo festival joys to field pain. All part of the fun. I’ll be hobbling around for a bit- and on the slow mend but I guess it took the love of hole filled-field work for the universe to slow my Summer road plans down. For a least a bit. Thanking #SDInstitute for the week of Owl wonders and the Ankle First Aid. For last years I was in the audience of National Geographic Explorers Festival and felt really privileged to be able to watch such an admirable group of people that are changing the world, seeking solutions for its most urgent problems. This year I had the honor of being invited as a speaker on behalf of @natgeopristineseas amazing team and it’s work to create this far 21 large marine reserves in the world in collaboration with governments, local communities, indigenous peoples and scientists from all over the globe. Without a doubt, it was and unforgettable and very emotional moment that I wanted to share with you. 📸 @cristiandonosoexplorer #natgeofest #natgeo #pristineseas #chile @insidenatgeo @natgeo @natgeo.la

너무 좋은 롤모델을 찾아서 기뻤다👏 1일차 요약: 'Stories to be told!'

A huge honour to chat with @sylvia.earle @mission_blue and @christinekeung at the #NatGeoFest , and then catch up with @ekponimo and hear about the incredible progress of @chowberryhq at the @rolex community morning. An amazing collection of people that can make great things happen - especially working together and learning from each other. Welcome to the new 2019 awardees! It was also brilliant to meet up again with @microsoft #AIforEarth @b.lei and Jennifer Marsman. #sixtysecondscience I don’t think it is any coincidence that the @natgeo explorers festival #natgeofest ended today, on #fathersday . I spent an incredible week on stage, meeting hundreds of amazing people doing their best to explore and protect the planet. I got to meet legends like Sylvia Earle, see the archives of NatGeo, pitch ideas, build friendships, and above all, immerse myself in what I love the most - science and humanity. And the entire time as I met other people, I learned their origin story or their drive which makes them the humans they are. And on this special holiday, I would like to highlight mine. The earliest memories I have of imagination were staring at my dads bookshelf, full of scifci novels and epic fantasies. I remember reading lord of the rings to us, and watching Star Trek at night. He was a nerd, and I wanted to be one too. He and my mother taught me the most important two life lessons I know : WORK HARD, and BE NICE. Being loud and loving, my family defined my personality today as an enthusiastic (loud...) yet hopefully caring and charismatic person. And through it all, my dads love of science and tech propelled me to explore. When my dad was taken from us too early due to ALS, he unknowingly forced me into my current path - I didn’t know exactly what I was doing, but whatever I did, I would do it well. As I stood on the stage this past week, almost 30, living in Hong Kong pursuing my PhD in marine research, I was struck by the path of it all. I am very proud of what I have done so far, and I know that’s because I have had incredible support and motivation. I know my dad would be proud, and though outrageously sad, I still smile. He taught me to live curious. We are all humans with our own stories. Maybe if the world realized that, realized our humanity, we would work together better. That is my hope. Thank you dad. I love you and miss you. Everyday. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out their - know that the most important thing you can do is to encourage, and support. You rock. #thisiswhatanexplorerlookslike #dowhatyoulove #livecurious @insidenatgeo

I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to share my dugong conservation story to such a passionate community. So many inspiring and awesome planetary leaders at the National Geographic Explorers Festival! Indeed, there’s still so much more to learn and so much more to do to achieve a planet in balance but hearing all the amazing work being done by explorers — scientists, conservationists, storytellers and educators around the globe gives me hope that we can still leave the world better than we found it. Truly an inspiring and amazing week that fueled me with a desire to be a better conservation scientist! Follow along Open Explorer to get updates about the work we do on dugongs. Posted @withrepost @natgeo Photos by Brent Stirton @brentstirton | This week, I spoke with Nat Geo writer Rachael Bale at the National Geographic Explorers Festival about our work on pangolins. Here are a couple of images from the pangolin story covering some of what I saw in Africa and Asia. #NatGeoFest #tikkihywoodtrust #savepangolinsofficial #savingvietnamswildlife #wildlifecrime #animalliberation #totalliberation
