You can choose not to participate in this and be just as healthy. So why wouldn't you?
An individual fighting for their life.
Crabs, lobsters, crayfish, shrimps, and prawns all fall under the large and diverse arthropod taxon and are part of the animal kingdom.
Many who are looking to reduce their cruel impact on non-humans first start by not consuming mammals, but fish and shellfish are often forgotten, likely due to their distance in similar features and characteristics in comparison to humans.
Yet these species face the same injustice, torture, and death as others, and research has shown they feel pain, just like us. In fact, crustaceans release stress hormones, similar to human adrenal hormones, in response to painful events.
Several methods are used to catch crabs, including setting traps in shallow water and dragging huge nets along the ocean floor. However, these methods are not only detrimental to their intended victims but also to other marine animals, who get caught in the nets and are known as by-catch. They are often injured in the process but are usually thrown back into the water regardless.
Lobsters and crabs are often kept alive during transportation and display—and to further add to the stress, have their legs tied together.
When they reach the restaurants and markets, they are kept in small tanks or buckets, with some places offering you to pick your own lobster or crab to eat. Many of the individuals kept in these conditions suffer from stress associated with confinement, low oxygen levels, and crowding.
If this weren’t horrific enough, they endure all of this only to be boiled alive or hacked apart with knives whilst fully conscious (and in the case of crabs, sometimes even microwaved alive). They will fight against this, thrashing their bodies wildly and scraping the sides of the pot in a desperate attempt to escape.
The video above shows an individual who wants to live but that we have decided will die for our palates. What kind of barbarity is this?
