What every architecture lover must see in Mallorca?
The first not-to-be-missed gem is Can Lis House, built by Jorn Utzon for his wife Lis and himself. Located in Portopetro on the top of a cliff, the house is built with the marés stone, making it blend into the landscape.
Can Lis is organized in four separate blocks, linked together with walls and courtyards. (pic 2-3) All face the sea with slightly different orientations following the line of the cliffs. The result is a house that makes optimum use of materials, light and views.
Most of the furniture is also made of stone, sculpted into shelving, tables, chairs and benches. (pic 4)
The window frames, mounted on the exterior surface of the walls allow a clear view of exterior suggesting a continuum between interior and exterior. (pic 5-6)
Numerous loggias and projecting roofs provide the necessary shade. (pic 7-8)
It is possible to visit the villa during opening days by reserving the places online (the visit is free of charge). Alternatively, you can contact the resident researchers living there during certain times of the year and ask for a visit.
