This is Rick Blankenburg. I had the honor to present him with an honorary proclamation in recognition of his 50 years of continuous participation in the Special Olympics, San Luis Obispo Region. This proclamation also recognized his parents, Dick and Maxine Blankenburg, for their help bringing the Special Olympics to SLO County in 1969.
Rick was one of the first 4 athletes from SLO County Region to participate in the Special Olympics. Currently there are over 700 athletes that compete from SLO County.
Rick started in 1969 in track and field, then moved onto gymnastics where he earned a gold medal at the 1987 World Games. He traveled to Ireland in 2003 to compete in the World Games. He has moved on to team sports and will compete in Bocce Ball this Friday May 3rd at the Regional Games at Cuesta College.
Rick also received recognition from the County Board of Supervisors, presented by Supervisor Lynn Compton and special recognition from the Oceano Kiwanis.
Rick is all smiles, so proud of his accomplishments and the most friendly person I have met! He’s 58 years young and I’m glad I finally got to meet him.
