UPDATE - HERCULES 💙 Little Hercules is settling in to life in foster care with the Trustees. He loves a cuddle, a walk or drive in the car and most especially, his dinner time! However, we have noticed that he can get a bit snappy and grumpy, especially when his back end is being touched.
Last night we took Hercules to our wonderful vet, Dr Tonkin of Tram Road Animal Care Services, in North Canterbury. Unfortunately the outlook for Mr Hercules right now is not so bright and we have been told “not to get too attached to this one” ... 😣😔 Hercules consumes a lot of water, which can be a sign of kidney issues, so we decided to complete a full blood panel on him. We expect those results shortly. Dr Tonkin also detected a heart murmur which is extensive enough to require expensive medication to prolong his life. He also has several rotten teeth to be removed which are merely dangling in place.
Hercules has a pretty evident deformity known as a “parrot mouth” (whereby his lower jaw is much shorter than his upper jaw). He also has very tender legs/hips and appears quite tense in his lower pelvis, so he will hopefully be fit enough to receive X-rays under sedation when he has his microchip, desex, chest X-ray to check the heart and dental.... Assuming his bloods prove he is fit to undergo anaesthetic. We are hoping he will therefore be fit and healthy enough to undergo surgery and for us to correct his various ailments and be placed on heart medication. If this is the case, he will be looking for a very special adoptive retirement home!
If he is not, he will receive palliative care and be put to sleep when the time is right. 😥😭We would keep him here with the Trustees as a “permanent foster” and make him comfortable and happy for a wee while. Either way, as usual we will all work together to do our very best and he will feel loved and supported no matter what he goes through.
A huge thank you to Dr Tonkin for donating her consult time and checking him out so thoroughly (while also avoiding bites 😬). If you are looking for a skilled, caring and understanding vet who knows the chihuahua breed well - look no further than Tram Road Animal Care Services!
