A young river otter was separated from his mom, and brought to me by some worried people. It was late, he was cold and exhausted. When the time was right, "Alex" was released back in to his family's denning area.
Otters at this age sometimes get separated from mother during moves, or for a variety of other reasons. Too often, people with good intentions can interfere and create the exact result they were looking to avoid. Sometimes help and rehabilitation is warranted, sometimes it's better to let nature do it's thing, sometimes it's an extremely fine line.
This handsome devil went on an adventure, luckily he fell into the hands of people who understand....and luckily, I knew his family and where their den site was located.
This outcome isn't typical for removed animals.
Please leave wildlife where it is! Most of the time mom is watching and is too scared to come out because of human activity. When you remove her baby, it can be bad for everyone.
