*SINGLE RELEASE HEARTBEAT - the story behind the song*
At the start of my travels to I spent some time in Tassie at the Rainbow gathering, a life changing event to me, and made some dear friends there. I kept being drawn back to this beautiful island state. So not long after I finished writing “Heartbeat” at Stradbroke Island, I decided to volunteer at @cygnet_folk_festival in Tasmania.
One of the bands that was playing at that festival I had just discovered online, and I fell in love with their music. The band was called @formidableveg (well, back then it was still called “Formidable Vegetable Sound System”, a project by Charlie Mgee, Mal Webb and Kylie Morrigan. This makes subjects like permaculture even ceooler than they already are.. I can praise them and their music as much as I want (witty, funny, forward thinking, uplifiting, humorous, spot on, and on top of that they’re allround amazing human beans) but just have a listen, you’ll get how stoked I was to see them live. Stoked to see them live, I would have danced my socks off if I wouldn’t have been barefeet.
After their gig Charlie and I had a chat, a boogie and a jam. We clicked and being a drifter looking for my next adventure could not resist the offer to tour and sing with them. Being given this opportunity gave me a realistic look into the touring life of being the all-DIY-musician Charlie is. Wow.. so many things to stay on top of... bookings, marketing, songwriting, recording on the go, playing shows, getting logistics together... much more than a fulltime job I can tell ya!
Charlie, Mal and Kylie liked my newly written song and being the amazing, supportive people they are, they eventually played cajon, backing vocals and second ukulele (Charlie), trumpet (Mal) and violin (Kylie) on the recording. Charlie helped me so much by asking several befriended studio’s along the way if we could record there, and mentally supported me through getting the song mixed by an really really good producer I had met in Sidney. But more on the studio’s, bass player, and producer in part III #storybehindthesong #heartbeat #indie #pop #femalemusician #independent #diy
