Running is a de-stresser for me.
Racing is a whole different animal.
Most often it is a mental battle within myself.... today was that battle.

Today felt like a ice hockey game to me. 3 completely different periods.
Reminded me of my old Jr hockey days years ago...it was fitting that the bib number I was given was the most famous hockey number there is 99 Wayne Gretzky.
The race or mental ice hockey game.
1st period (km 0-4) Started off strong, right where I wanted to be...good forecheck lol
All offense not much worry about defense... everything was feeling good.
2nd period(km 4-7) wow what a change, momentum swing.. physically I hit a wall... feeling the week's work of physical labour building rock walls my back started bug me and legs soon got heavy...pace slowed...mind wondered....got passed and it seemed to zap my energy....the battle inside was on.
3rd period (7-10km) I started to give myself a positive pep talk... quoting one of my favorite books the four agreements..that today this is all I have in me...this is my best , accept it and be gentle on myself....then I stopped my thought process at the final water station..and as I threw cold water on my face i said out loud...Fuck this..you got this..just fucking go for it...come on.
And i did!!! I mentally turned it all around...and unbelievably ran my 3 fastest kms of race at the end... caught back up and finished strong, 7th overall and 1st in my age group....but more importantly won the battle inside my head!!! Small victories..stay positive and push through!!!
