(reprocessed) - Humpback whale breaking the surface while feeding in Seward, Alaska. Those grooves on the throat are called ventral pleats, which are folds of skin that allow the the mouth of the whale to massively expand. On the upper jaw you can see baleen coming from baleen plates, and it can be from 18 inches to 3 feet long in the back. As the whale rushes to the surface it opens its mouth to collect the schooling fish, and then forces the water back out through those baleen filters to collect the fish. Getting this photo was pretty tricky. I wanted an angle as low as possible, so I was laying in the cold wet sand with the icy water splashing on my hands. The birds would react a split second before the whale broke the surface, so I had that time to aim and get a rough focus, then in the blink of an eye I had to center the whale, focus, and snap the shot. It was one of the most memorable days I've ever had! This was my first wild whale, which was a bucket list experience. Usually you only get an experience like this from a boat so to see this from shore, this close, and to get the shot from this angle, makes it very special to me. ** Follow me for more facts, stories, and photos! Dall sheep in Denali National Park, Alaska. This beautiful female, or ewe, doesn't have too much to worry about. Their main predators are wolves and grizzly bears, but even golden eagles can take a young sheep. They are not easy prey however, as they have split hooves with a rubbery surface which allow them to be extremely agile while bounding along cliff faces and rocks. They've even been known push wolves off of cliffs as a last stand. ** Follow me for more facts, stories, and photos! All animals are wild and unbaited. This is my reaction when realizing how long it's been since I've posted. Thanks for hanging in there with me everyone! Grad school pretty much occupies all of my free time, but I'm halfway done. As my summer field work starts up, I think I'll have more time to get back into posting regularly. Sea otter in Seward, Alaska. These endangered sea otters are a keystone species for kelp forests in their native ranges. When sea otters are removed from an ecosystem, sea urchin populations go unchecked and devastate the kelp, which is the foundation for the entire ecosystem. Currently, oil spills are their greatest threat. ** Follow me for more facts, stories, and photos! All animals are wild and unbaited. To see all my new photos, head to my website! (reprocessed) - One of my favorite photos I took in Alaska. Dall sheep in Denali National Park, Alaska. Lovingly referred to as "dot sheep" by the locals and tour guides because most sightings are of sheep on distant slopes where they just look like white dots. The ancestor of these sheep lived in Asia and crossed from Siberia to Alaska over the Bering land bridge about 750,000 years ago during the Pleistocene. These sheep moved south eventually as far as northwestern Mexico. Today, two species (generally speaking) exist in North America; the bighorn sheep (ranging from northwestern Mexico to Canada) and the Dall sheep (ranging from Alaska to northwestern Canada). Not all sheep crossed the Bering land bridge though, and the ones who stayed became the Siberian snow sheep of today. ** Follow me for more facts, stories, and photos! A fledgling piping plover on the shore of a nesting island, along the Arkansas River. They are not a common species to see down here, but it's not usual for me to bump into other nesting shorebirds while studying the interior least terns along this river. Piping plovers are federally threatened, and endangered around the Great Lakes region of the country as well as within quite a few individual states. Why? Like the interior least terns I'm studying, they like to nest on sandy beaches and islands. People have taken over these areas, and the introduction of dams to major river systems disturbs the natural high spring flows which is crucial for sandbar creation and in keeping them largely free of vegetation. This adorable bird is only 5.9-7.5 inches long! ** Follow me for more facts and photos! All animals are wild and unbaited. To see all my photos, head to my website! I am super excited to say that a photo of mine made it in the 2019 Photo Issue of WYOMING WILDLIFE! Honorable Mention in the Wildlife category. This is one of the first contests I've entered, and I'm very excited to have gotten a mention! This is the first time one of my photos has even been printed in a magazine, and I absolutely flipped when I saw it... I had no idea one of mine got in! Pick up a copy if you can, there are some absolutely stunning photos in there. I think well over 3,000 photos were entered in total! Unfortunately I put down my current address so I don't get to represent Greybull, Wyoming, but that's alright. Woooo! Special thanks to the amazing @tinmanlee whos workshop on photo processing has taken my photos to a new level, head over to his page for details and to see some of the best wildlife photography you've ever seen. ** Follow me for more facts and photos! Interior least tern egg and chick, very early in the morning on the Arkansas River. The interior least tern is an endangered subspecies of the least tern, and instead of nesting on the gulf coast they nest on the Missouri, Mississippi, Colorado, Arkansas, Red, and Rio Grande River systems. The species is doing better and will hopefully be delisted from the endangered species list soon. Their main struggle is that they nest on open sand/gravel on the shores of the rivers, river islands, and large rooftops. Not only can the chicks and eggs be easy targets for predators (since they nest on the ground) but they are very prone to flooding and overheating. The parents actually skim the water as they fish and collect water in their breast feathers, which they bring back to cool the eggs as they sit on them. They're wonderful parents, and it's been a pleasure getting to study them for my graduate degree. ** Follow me for more facts and photos! All animals are wild and unbaited. Giant swallowtail along the quiet shores of the Arkansas River. This is the largest species of butterfly in North America, with a wingspan ranging from 5.5 to 7.5 inches! Male Costa's hummingbird in Phoenix, Arizona. Hummingbirds are famous for having the fastest metabolism of all vertebrates. This creates a bit of a problem when sleeping though, because they could starve if they slept too long. At night hummingbirds can enter a state of torpor (a sort of mini-hibernation) to slow their metabolism and lower their body temperature! These little ones will only get to be about 3-3.5 inches long. ** Follow me for more facts and photos! All animals are wild and unbaited. To see all my photos, head to my website! Gray tree frog, Arkansas. There's two species in Arkansas that can only be distinguished by call, and even that is not nearly as easy as it sounds. But, due to the light throat, this is almost certainly a female. A queen butterfly helping to pollinate some wildflowers, on a remote shore of the Arkansas River (not someone's garden). This is a mimic of the monarch butterfly, which unlike this queen, has some serious conservation issues worth discussing. Monarchs probably deserve to be listed as an endangered species, as their numbers have shown long-term declines, and in the last decade, significant declines. Some overwintering populations have decreased by 50% to 90% in the last decade in the United States. We may see this species go extinct in our lifetimes, which is heartbreaking. They are important pollinators, and even a food source, for many other species in their ecosystems. One of the main reasons for their population declines is the removal of milkweed, which they rely on for food and shelter. People treat milkweed as just that, a weed, and they kill it. If you can, keep your milkweed, and encourage others to do the same. ** Follow me for more facts and photos! All animals are wild and unbaited. To see all my photos, head to my website! You're Next (reprocessed) - Merry Christmas and happy holidays! Hope you get a nice big meal like this coyote did. This coyote is feeding on a Canada goose in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, the day after Christmas last year. Canada geese (not "Canadian") migrate between the northern reaches of Canada and Alaska to the southernmost United States and parts of northern Mexico, but they are year-round residents in most of the United States. You can also find some unlikely bird species in Yellowstone in the winter who have figured out that there is not only open water in the area, but warm water (and food) as well. ** Follow me for more facts and photos! Hope your holidays are going well! Sorry for my absence - I've been reprocessing a ton of my photos after a masterclass from the amazing Tin Man Lee. Bison are incredible animals, any way you look at them. In the winter, they use their massive heads to sweep the snow aside and expose the vegetation they're looking to eat, which is just what this bison has been doing. Their coats are so warm and insulating that snow will just sit on their backs all day without melting. I took this photo sitting down in knee-deep snow, and I remember wishing I was as warm as this bull is. ** Follow me for more facts and photos! To see all my new photos, head to my website! I am certainly not a nature photographer but we live close to nature. To have an opportunity to see and photograph and sometimes paint or draw the life cycles experience seems somehow important even on the most superficial and primitive level. In this case we were watching a White-Tailed Kite hunt (kiteing) in a large field and eventually capture a small rodent. This very short video shows the final outcome. For those who follow my wife’s feed this is the same Kite that she had so nicely photographed. #white -tailed kite #lifecycle #naturalenvironment #CarpinteriaBluffs #Morningwalk #explore805 #anartistlife #anartistslife #environment #Environmental #naturewalks #whitetailedkite #mybirdwatch #birdofprey #birds_of_instagram #existential #existentialism #birdvideo #birdoftheday #birdwatching #birdgram #raptors #hawk #birdsofig #birdsofinstagram #lifecycle #wildlifevideos #discoverwildlife #wildlplanet

Happy Halloween! Great horned owls have the widest range of any true owl in the Americas. They prefer to feed on small mammals like rodents, rabbits, and hares... but will eat anything they can catch and overpower. Males will live in, and defend, territories throughout the year. In some parts of their range this territory can be as large 6.2 square miles (Yukon), but also as small as 0.8 square miles (Wyoming). If you see one after sunset in WY, odds are that it's on a telephone pole. This doesn't make for great pictures, but the stars (and moon) aligned just right for me to make the most of this scene. Owls are my white whale, and I am almost obsessed with photographing them. Why? Because they are active when the light is really low, and every minute that goes by means I'm more likely to see an owl, but the light critical for a photograph is fast fading. The window of opportunity is so small, plus the task of finding one. I've watched the last light I need slip away, as an owl comes out and stares at me, as if it knows that I can't take a photo. This was the first time I captured a "keeper" photo of an owl, and I couldn't have been more excited. I had to set my tripod in the middle of a small Wyoming highway to try a few quick photos between cars. When I got everything just right, and I realized the photo I just captured.... my reaction was a lot like Tom Hanks in Castaway when he finally makes a fire... but I was dancing in the middle of a empty highway at night in the cold. The eyeshine in this photo is real, and was captured from a small flash from my camera. WHAT A BEAUTY! ** Follow me for more facts, stories, and photos! All animals are wild and unbaited. Native to most of the northern hemisphere, the red fox is one of the most widely distributed carnivores on the planet, with over 40 recognized subspecies. A volcanic peak in the mountains of Alaska. Just east of Lake Clark National Park, this is the same mountain range that runs south out of Denali National Park. Mountain goats in Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska. This is a nanny (female) and a new kid that's just a few months old. They tend to live at high elevations, up to 13,000 feet, and stay above the treeline all year! In some coastal areas of their range, they might migrate down to the lower altitudes, so seeing them here was beyond exciting. Both males (billies) and females have black horns which can grow to almost 12 inches long. They have a double-layered coat, and the outer layer consists of hollow hairs to help with insulation. These coats can protect them when the temperatures drop to -50F with winds up to 99 mph. Another bucket list animal for me to see in the wild! I knew there was a chance I'd see some as distant white dots high up on a cliff, but we were incredibly lucky to see some goats down low enough on some cliffs for a few photos. It was pretty foggy, wet, cold, and I was on a moving boat, but I got the best photo I could have out of that situation. ** Follow me for more facts, stories, and photos! Wild horses, in the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming. Feral horses have been around this area of the country since the 1600's and are descendants of horses from early Spanish explorers, rather than a unique species which survived here from prehistoric times. Some horses however, are newly-released horses from locals who can no longer care for a horse. You can pick them out because they're branded (but I won't be photographing those). Even though they are absolutely beautiful, these wild horses to have to be managed because they aren't native. Yes... they've been here for hundreds of years, but we (humans) brought them here. They eat a lot, and that causes direct competition with native wildlife such as deer and antelope. For this reason, every now and then the feds come and round up some of these horses and take them to live elsewhere in large sanctuaries. The hard facts are that with no natural predators, herd sizes can double every 4 years, so the BLM removes thousands of wild horses every year in order to protect the native wildlife. These horses can also be privately adopted or sold, but the BLM will not sell to "kill" buyers or slaughterhouses. The landscape in the basin is often full of soft pastel colors in the hills, which almost look painted. Some wild horse herds can be seen from the highway, but these horses were so far in the backcountry that they've probably only seen the occasional hunter. The slight haze is from heat radiating up from the ground, preventing me from getting a perfectly sharp. However, I still love the colors and the feel of this photo. ** Follow me for more facts, stories, and photos! All animals are wild and unbaited. A coastal brown bear sow and cub, Lake Clark National Park, Alaska. Sows must stay alert because roaming male bears will kill cubs, which might be why she only has one cub. This sow and cub are looking at a large boar (male) about 100 meters away, keeping an eye on his movements as they pass by. I've always loved bears, and I particularly love how from the front they can look as ferocious as anything, but then they turn around and something about a furry bear butt always makes me chuckle. A major source of food in this particular area are clams, which the bears will dig up at low tide and pry open, surprisingly delicately, with their massive claws. A male (boar) coastal brown bear in Lake Clark National Park, Alaska. Coastal brown bears grow larger than any other due to their calorie rich diet of fish. A male inland grizzly bear, like those in Yellowstone, can weigh around 600 pounds. A coastal male brown bear can weigh 800-1,200 pounds! Some monsters have even cracked 2,000 pounds. A coastal grizzly sow and cub, Lake Clark National Park, Alaska. This cub is in its first year, and like a good mother bear she is probably pretty tired. She found a good lookout, a nice place to hide from the big boars ambling around, and decided it was a good time for a quick nap. The cub had other ideas, but eventually took a quick snooze as well. This mother is in peak lactation months (June-July) and this one cub will drink up to 45 ounces per day, which is over a third of a gallon. Bear cubs need to grow quickly in order to survive the next winter so bears have some of the fattiest milk of all mammals. Human and cow milk is about 4%, but brown bear milk is around 25% fat. ** Follow me for more facts, stories, and photos! All animals are wild and unbaited. A great example of a braided river in Denali National Park, Alaska. This is fed by a glacier which produces very silty water and lots of gravel. It may look like a river that has dried up, but this is how it always is. The water close to the glacier has too much silt to support fish, but they do farther away. ** Follow me for more facts, stories, and photos! All animals are wild and unbaited. Humpback whale fluke in Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska. Things are heavier out of the water, so whales and dolphins will raise their flukes above the surface so gravity will help push them down and propel them into their dive so they use minimal effort. Clever, right? I'm used to big landscapes, where your line of sight goes for dozens of miles and towering mountains make you feel small, but the scale of things in Alaska is like nothing I've ever experienced. As an animal walking around, I've never felt so small in a landscape before. ** Follow me for more facts, stories, and photos! All animals are wild and unbaited. male willow ptarmigan in Denali National Park, Alaska. This is the only species of grouse where the male helps with parental care of the chicks. It's hard to see from this photo, but their legs and the tops of their feet are feathered. Horned puffins! Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska. These birds are small, standing about 8 inches tall, with a wingspan of less than 2 feet. That black horn extending up from their eye is the mark of a sexually mature bird, and it is how they got their name. They are monomorphic, so males and females look the same. They winter out at sea but breed and nest on the rocky islands and cliffs of Alaska, Siberia, and British Columbia. They lay their egg in a crevice or cavity in the rocks. Another bucket list animal for me, one that I hope to someday photograph on foot and much closer. I didn't get many chances to photograph the puffins we saw since we were on a boat and getting close was tough, but I had to keep at least one shot even if it wasn't super sharp or close. Grizzly cub, Denali National Park, Alaska. This is another shot of the 2 cubs we saw up close with a sow grizzly. You may be thinking that this looks pretty big for a 1 year old cub, but everything in Alaska is bigger. There is some truth to that - an ecogeographical rule of thumb called Bergmann's rule which states that within a broadly distributed taxonomic clade (type of animal, like bears) populations and species of larger sizes tend to be found in colder climates. Bears are a great example of this, with the smaller species (sloth bear, spectacled bear, black bear) being primarily found closer to the equator and in warmer climates than brown bears and polar bears. Within a species, like brown bears, they aren't as big in Colorado as they are in Alaska. The rule is mostly applied to large bodied mammals and birds. Why is this? Surface area to volume ratio. As size goes up, the surface area goes up by a factor of 2 while the volume goes up by a factor of 3. With a lower surface area to volume ratio of a large body, the animal radiates (loses) less heat to the air, and is therefore better suited for colder climates. Neat, right?! ** Follow me for more facts, stories, and photos! All animals are wild and unbaited. Dall sheep in Denali National Park, Alaska. Lovingly referred to as "dot sheep" by the locals and tour guides because most sightings are of sheep on distant slopes and just look like white dots. A grizzly bear sow in Denali National Park, Alaska. This is a pretty famous sow in the park, who was apparently taking temporary shelter near the road. Big males (boars) will kill cubs, but they don't like to be around humans. Since traffic in the park is limited to company tour busses the chance of being hit is minimalized, and the chance of running in to a boar is decreased, so it's a win-win for her. This sow had two cubs that were 1 year old. ** Follow me for more facts, stories, and photos! All animals are wild and unbaited. Humpback whale breaking the surface while feeding in Seward, Alaska. Humpbacks range in size but can grow to over 50 feet and weigh 25-30 tons! Getting this photo was pretty tricky. I wanted an angle as low as possible, so I was laying in the cold wet sand with the icy water splashing on my hands. The birds would react a split second before the whale break the surface, so I had that time to aim and get a rough focus, then in the blink of an eye I had to center the whale, focus, and snap the shot. It was one of the most memorable days I've ever had! This was my first wild whale, which was a bucket list experience. Humpback whale breaking the surface while feeding in Seward, Alaska. Exactly one year from today I left Germany to start off my journey to Africa. I had absolutely no idea what to expect. Upon arrival it was quite a strange feeling seeing all this dry and beige-coloured land since I was used to a green and vivid landscape. At first I didn't like it at all. A few weeks later that suddenly changed. I started loving it. Loving it so much that even though I'm back in my familiar green world now I'm missing it. It took me a while but I finally realised that there is more than the colour of the trees that stands for life. It's about the local people with their amazing and touchable stories, the unique wildlife with its battles and love affairs and it's about accepting each other because the skin color doesn't matter. #africa #southafrica #namibia #importantlessonsoflife #momentsoflife #happyanniversary #travelmakesyouricher #etosha #etoshanationalpark #safari #africansafari #photosafari #africanwildlife #africanwildlifephotography #wildlifephotographer #wildlifephotography #wildlplanet #wildlifeaddicts #exclusive_wildlife #africaamazing #fansofafrica #loveafrica #exploreafrica #visitafrica #visitnamibia #throwback #fernweh

Grizzly bear, in Yellowstone National Park. Grizzlies are a subspecies of brown bear, and get their name from Lewis and Clark's expedition who used the term to either describe their grizzled hair color, or their grisly and fearsome nature. I was driving down into Grand Teton National Park to look for grizzly bears, but while still in Yellowstone this bear suddenly appeared on the road. It was a part of road that is heavily forested, so you don't tend to see much there because it's solid trees. Once his head appeared, I stopped, and after a while with the bear it became a "bear jam" of other cars. He wandered off into the trees and everyone left, but I figured he was going to come back into a clearing up ahead, so I went and set up. Sure enough, he did, and it started another full-blown bear jam after other cars saw the end of the sighting. The whole process happened again, where I caused 3 bear jams in total with this bear. Patience pays off! Such a beautiful animal!! ** Follow me for more facts, stories, and photos! All animals are wild and unbaited. Great horned owl, near Basin, Wyoming. This adult is part of a nesting pair that I was watching. The landowner was nice enough to give me permission to hike in to the nest, which currently has 2 fluffy chicks, but is terribly difficult to photograph. Owls will always hold a special place in my heart; there is just something about them that is hard to describe. I love their elusiveness, their regal stature, and the intense focus (or surprise) in their eyes. Those long feathers that resemble horns (as their name suggests) aren't horns or ears. In fact, their ears are just behind their eyes and offset slightly to increase how precisely they can pinpoint the location of a sound (prey). ** Follow me for more facts, stories, and photos! Red fox kits, in the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming. Red foxes are famous for having many different color variants, which are more common in colder regions. Variants are usually darker than these typical reds, and most famously include the cross, silver, and platinum variants. I've had foxes on my list to photograph for months now. I've spent hours tracking foxes to dens, and around 40 or more total hours sitting motionless near dens (1-2+ hours at a time), hoping to get a shot. The goal was to get some wild foxes comfortable with my presence so that when spring came, I could hope to photograph some kits. More effort, patience, and time has gone into getting these kit photos than anything I've ever photographed before, which makes them very special to me. Ironically, this wasn't one of the dens I was sitting, but I instead startled an exploring kit one evening while I was photographing a great horned owl, and I followed him back to his den. The den was facing in a way that sunrise would give me the perfect light. So before sunrise, I got out there, set up, and waited. When the first pair of ears finally popped up into view, I was shaking with excitement! One of the best days I’ve ever had. ** Follow me for more facts, stories, and photos! Male yellow-headed blackbird, in the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming. During the mating season these birds nest in cattail marshes, and the males are very territorial, hopping around from perch to perch. ** Follow me for more facts, stories, and photos! Red fox kits, in the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming. How cute are they! Litters are usually 4-6 kits, but there can be as many as a dozen or more kits sometimes! There are at least 4 kits in this litter, but they were so rambunctious that I never actually got all 4 in a good shot. To be continued! One of the best days I’ve ever had behind a camera! ** Follow me for more facts, stories, and photos! Red fox kit, in the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming. (I'll be reposting this later because I now have a more color-accurate monitor, and these colors aren't quite what I want - stay tuned) Red fox kits are born with bright blue eyes, but they change to amber after about 4-5 weeks. I've had foxes on my list to photograph for months now. A pair of common mergansers in Stanley, Idaho. These beautiful birds eat mostly fish, and will dive underwater to chase them. Like other fishing birds, they have serrated edges on their bill to helps hold on to slippery fish. But, as with most animals, they'll eat what they can get. These common mergansers will also eat insects and other aquatic invertebrates, and sometimes even other small birds and mammals. ** Follow me for more facts, stories, and photos! Great horned owl, in an abandoned barn where the pair is nesting, in the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming. These are the second largest owl in North America, next to the snowy owl, with a wingspan of 3-5 feet and can weigh 2-5.5 pounds. They are formidable hunters that prefer prey they can swallow whole, like mice, rats, and voles, but will take any animal they can overpower including rabbits, hares, birds, fish, amphibians, insects, reptiles, and other small mammals like baby foxes. Do you see those talons? For a reference, this owls is standing a little shy of 2 feet tall. Great horned owls have a grip strength comparable to much larger raptors, like golden eagles, and can grip at 300 pounds per square inch (more than a human)! ** Follow me for more facts, stories, and photos!
