Hurricane Alicia, the first and last major hurricane of the 1983 Atlantic Hurricane Season, reached its max intensity in the Gulf of Mexico 36 years ago today. Shortly after meeting the Cat 3 (111 mph) threshold with sustained winds at 115mph, the storm made landfall devastating the Galveston shoreline. As it continued north along the mid-west states the storm collectively caused 7.7 billion (2019 USD) in damage, making it the costliest tropical system the U.S. had ever experienced at that time. 21 People lost their lives in the storm however, thanks to ample warning time from the National Weather Service, upwards of 80,000 people evacuated from area before impact which undoubtedly saved a number of lives. Galveston received the brunt of the impact where high tides were recorded topping 11 feet. High Winds were also felt heavily on the island as sustained winds reached a brutal 96 mph and wind gusts peaked out at 127 mph. 23 tornados were also confirmed during the aftermath review of the storm. Alicia’s hurricane status landfall was the first experience in 3 years by the states, breaking a record dry spell for the nation. Alicia would be the last major hurricane to hit Texas until Bret 16 years later which hit southern Texas as a Category 3 Storm.
